Job mistakes you should avoid

There’s no doubt that you can go wrong with some of your job decisions and Forbes has lately summarized some of the most common myths and mistakes surrounding this topic.

  1. Don’t put off starting your career too long: the twenties are a defining time in a career life.
  2. Holding out for the absolute dream job can be dangerous. Sometimes it is better to take a not so perfect job that might lead to another opportunity down the track. And according to Forbes, it is also fine if it’s something a little unconventional.
  3. Don’t be unrealistic about your skills and goals – the sentence “you can do anything you want in the whole wide world”, is not really true.
  4. Do not resign from a job too quickly or easily if you’re not a hundred per cent happy. Rather ask yourself some questions like: “What is it about this job that makes me unhappy? Am I still getting something from the experience? Why did I think I wanted to work here?” Keep financial considerations in your mind before making a final decision.
  5. Job hopping can be dangerous, but might be acceptable if it is targeted and efficient. Forbes recommends remembering, what differentiates a desirable job hopper from an un-hireable and this is to have a narrative arc to a résumé that ties all these decisions together into a cohesive story.
